When the Ship Comes In

" When the Ship Comes In " es una canción de música folk de Bob Dylan , lanzada en su tercer álbum , The Times They Are a-Changin' , en 1964.

Fondo y composición
Joan Baez afirma en el documental No Direction Home que la canción se inspiró en un empleado de hotel que se negó a permitirle una habitación a Dylan debido a su apariencia "sucia" (no era famoso fuera del movimiento folk en ese momento). La canción luego se convirtió en una alegoría épica en expansión sobre cómo vencer a los opresivos "poderes fácticos". Otra inspiración fue la canción de Bertolt Brecht / Kurt Weill , "Pirate Jenny".

Según el biógrafo Clinton Heylin , "When the Ship Comes In" fue escrita en agosto de 1963 "en un ataque de resentimiento, en una habitación de hotel, después de que su aspecto descuidado hubiera llevado a un empleado impertinente del hotel a negarle la entrada hasta que su compañera, Joan Baez , había avalado su buen carácter". Dylan luego interpretó la canción en el Carnegie Hall el 26 de octubre de 1963; esta actuación se incluyó en The Bootleg Series vol. 7: Sin dirección a casa: la banda sonora (2005).
